1/9/10
Sitting on the back porch of the Arundel house overlooking the city scape. The opera house is supposedly on the opposite side of the skyline. Still yet to see it. Maybe it’s the fact that I have heard so many people say it so many times but, damn, its hot here. The sun hits you in a way that I haven’t ever experienced before, even in LA. You can feel it bear down and almost to pierce your shoulders. Needless to say I’ve been glopping on the sunscreen.
I don’t get internet until Monday so I won’t be able to set up a blog until then unless I find an internet cafĂ©. We took a little trip into a Northgate-sized shopping center where I picked up some groceries and also got a pair of flip-flops from Kmart. Might go there for some shoes later as they are very cheap.
Getting into the country was a BITCH. Probably not as bad as anyone into the states, but certainly an unnecessary hassle. The biggest problem came from a customs guy who clearly just hated his job (who can blame him?). He stopped about 6 of us and told us that out “tourist” visas only lasted 3 months and told us that if we stay even a day after, we may be caught and may be detained. Since Maren was the first of us to go through his line, he made her tell us all of this (we were shunted to the side while someone talked to her). Maten said the visa was for six months and they told her she was wrong. We checked the documents later, and we appear to be correct. We’ll call immigration later to make sure. We had a quick run-down of our program with our trip leader once we got to our lodging (the Arundel House) right across the street from “Sydney Uni” as the locals call it. Just finished lunch and now I’m gonna go run.
P.S. Internet restrictions suck. It’s like going back 10-15 years.
